From November 1 of this year, a "social norm" for electricity usage will be introduced. According to this norm, customers who exceed the specified limit will pay significantly higher fees. Economist Otabek Bakirov provided this information.

Starting November 1:

For consumers in the III group whose electricity consumption exceeds the average monthly usage:

• 2 times the established tariff for consumption from 1,001 to 5,000 kWh;

• 3 times the established tariff for consumption from 5,001 to 10,000 kWh;

• For consumption above 10,000 kWh, a 4-fold multiplier will be applied to the established tariff.

These changes were approved by Cabinet of Ministers Decision No. 245 on July 15, 2023, and will become effective on November 1.

"It is worth noting that increased multipliers for excessive electricity consumption were initially introduced in 2020 but were not enforced," stated the economist.

Previously, we reported on the de facto subsidy of 1.1 trillion soums to oligarchs, privateers, and individuals consuming over 10,000 kWh of electricity per month. These funds could have been allocated to pensions, scholarships, and teachers' salaries," said the economist.

According to him, the government has finally taken steps in the right direction by moving away from favoring the wealthy and addressing electricity tariff issues in favor of the broader social class.
