27873Two Uzbek nationals were apprehended at the Indira Gandhi Airport in Delhi after attempting to smuggle a significant quantity of gold articles into the country. The incident, reported by the "Dunyo" news agency, highlights the ongoing challenge of illegal gold transfers in India.
The detained individuals, who frequently traveled to Delhi for trade purposes, arrived on a flight from Tashkent. During the initial search at the airport, authorities found nothing suspicious as the Uzbek passengers had intentionally left a bag of gold near the conveyor belt. However, one of the suspects, realizing their cover was blown, attempted to flee on another flight but was ultimately apprehended.
An official involved in the case stated, "The accused passenger was identified and closely monitored from the moment they disembarked the flight. Although no contraband was found during the initial baggage and identity check, the individual's behavior raised suspicion."
Subsequently, the second Uzbek passenger, exhibiting suspicious behavior, was closely observed, and their identity was confirmed. Although no illicit items were discovered during the luggage inspection, it was later revealed that this individual had left their belongings in the customs hall, presumably out of fear of getting caught.
Upon scanning the abandoned bag, authorities made a startling discovery—a total of 16.5 kilograms of gold in the form of chains concealed within it.
The woman who left the bag was identified through video surveillance footage. During the search operation, she was apprehended while attempting to board an Air Astana flight to Almaty. The investigation is currently underway, with the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Delhi assuming control of the process and establishing working relationships with the relevant law enforcement agencies. Efforts are also being made to arrange a meeting with the detained citizens.
In light of this incident, the diplomatic mission has urged Uzbek citizens to strictly adhere to foreign laws when traveling abroad, particularly in India, and to avoid falling victim to false promises made by dubious groups or individuals.
This occurrence follows the recent arrest of another Uzbek citizen in India who was caught trying to illegally transport over 3 kilograms and 208 grams of gold out of the country.
As investigations continue, authorities are determined to clamp down on illegal gold smuggling, safeguarding the integrity of India's borders and preserving its economic stability.
