A Russian Consulate General is set to open in Samarkand in the coming days, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov announced at a reception hosted by the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Russia to mark the 34th anniversary of Uzbekistan’s independence.

Ryabkov said the move demonstrates the mutual commitment to strengthening Russian-Uzbek relations, including at the regional level.

“Work on the establishment of the Russian Consulate General in Samarkand is being finalized. The Consulate General will open in the coming days. This is further confirmation of the desire to expand bilateral relations, including regionally,” he said.

The decision to open the consulate was signed by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on February 13, 2024. More than a year later, preparations for its opening are nearly complete. This will be Moscow’s first official consulate in Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan currently operates six consulates-general in Russia, located in Vladivostok, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, and St. Petersburg, in addition to its embassy in Moscow.

It is also worth noting that Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in China.
