A five-month-old baby has died in Khatirchi district of Navoi region after the child’s father reportedly stuffed a sock into the infant’s mouth to stop the baby from crying. Zamon reported the incident.

According to the report, the incident occurred on January 10. The father allegedly put a sock into the baby’s mouth because the child was crying. As a result, the infant began to turn blue due to oxygen deprivation. The mother then rushed the baby to the hospital.

“On January 10 at around midnight, a patient was brought in in extremely critical condition, in a state of clinical death. The heart and breathing had stopped. We carried out cardiopulmonary resuscitation, after which the heart activity was restored. The child was treated for four days in the pediatric intensive care unit in accordance with standard protocols, and was examined by the necessary specialists. Despite these efforts, biological death was recorded on January 14 at around 10:00 p.m.,” a doctor said.

According to representatives of the local neighborhood committee, this was the man’s second family, with two sons. In his previous family, he had also reportedly subjected his children — a daughter and a son — to regular abuse. Members of the neighborhood council had repeatedly held preventive discussions with the man and had kept him under monitoring.

The Navoi regional Department of Internal Affairs said a criminal case has been opened against the suspect under Article 104 of the Criminal Code (intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm). A measure of restraint in the form of detention has been applied. Preliminary investigative actions are currently underway.

It is worth noting that earlier reports emerged from Uzun district of Surkhandarya region about a man who subjected his wife and her newborn child to abuse and forcibly kept them in a livestock shed for five months. A court verdict was later issued against the man and his relatives.
