The U.S.-based company OpenAI, known for its work in artificial intelligence, has registered as a foreign entity providing electronic services in Uzbekistan. This was announced by the Interregional Tax Inspectorate for Large Taxpayers.
According to the statement, “The American company OpenAI, the developer of the ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) chatbot and the DALL-E digital image generation model, has registered as a VAT taxpayer in the Republic of Uzbekistan.”
With OpenAI's registration, the number of foreign internet companies officially registered for tax purposes in Uzbekistan has reached 67.
It is worth recalling that the Chinese online marketplace Temu was previously registered as a legal entity in Uzbekistan. However, on March 20, access to the platform was blocked for failing to pay value-added tax (VAT) during its operations in the country. At a press conference held by the Agency for Information and Mass Communications on April 1, Mubin Mirzaev, First Deputy Chairman of the Tax Committee, stated that Temu owed approximately 46 billion sums in unpaid taxes. He noted that if the company settles its tax obligations, it will be allowed to resume and legalize its activities in Uzbekistan.
