17252A police officer who beat a citizen in the Bekabad city police department of the Tashkent region, leading to the citizen’s death, has been sentenced to 9 years in prison. The court’s verdict was reviewed by QALAMPIR.UZ.
According to the court document, F.M., born in 1991, worked as a prevention inspector in the Crime Prevention Department of the Bekabad city police department from January 2022 to July 2024. As a law enforcement officer, he overstepped his authority during the incident.
On June 19, 2024, at 17:30, F.M. arrested D.Yu., born in 1981, after the brother, who had been resisting police officers' lawful demands, was forcibly taken from the Bekabad City Court building to the Bekabad City Internal Affairs Department. Without taking D.Yu. into the interrogation room, F.M. bent his arms behind his back, struck him in the abdomen with his knee, and then knocked him to the ground, continuing to beat him in the face and abdomen. This resulted in severe bodily injury.
Instead of following the proper procedure for documenting the actions of the brothers, F.M. unlawfully detained them in the department's detention center, despite not having the legal basis for their detention. D.Yu. died from his injuries at the scene.
During the trial on December 24, 2024, at the Bekabad District Criminal Court, F.M. pleaded not guilty. He claimed that the investigation had wrongfully charged him and that he had not kicked D.Yu. He insisted that the incident in the cell had been misinterpreted and that he had only acted to restore order, apologizing to the victims' families and expressing his willingness to compensate for damages.
However, witness testimonies and other evidence confirmed F.M.'s guilt. The court convicted him under Article 104, Part 3, Subparagraph “d” (intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm resulting in the death of the victim), Article 109, Part 1 (intentional infliction of minor bodily harm), and Article 206, Part 1 (acting beyond official authority) of the Criminal Code. He was sentenced to 9 years in prison, with the added penalty of a 3-year ban from working in the Internal Affairs Directorate system or any state-managed organizations that involve material responsibility. The sentence will be served in a general regime colony.
