3512Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), met with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan on June 5, as reported by the President's press service.
During the meeting, they discussed the practical steps taken towards Uzbekistan's accession to the WTO.
It was positively noted that two Working Group meetings were held in a short time, active negotiations with member countries are ongoing, agricultural support conditions are being discussed, and efforts to align national legislation with the organization's norms and rules continue.
The importance of cooperation in developing a "green" economy, boosting e-commerce, and exporting digital services was emphasized.
Special attention was given to enhancing the expertise of Uzbek specialists in international trade regulation. In this regard, the proposal to establish a trade policy competence center in Uzbekistan with WTO support was highlighted.
President Mirziyoyev thanked the WTO Director General for participating in the roundtable discussion and meeting with students from Uzbekistan's leading universities and congratulated her on being awarded the title of honorary doctor by the University of World Economy and Diplomacy.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala expressed her support for Uzbekistan's efforts to join the WTO.
