451 people were convicted for insults and defamation in Uzbekistan in 2024

2924In the first 10 months of this year, a total of 451 individuals were convicted under Article 140 of the Criminal Code (insult) in Uzbekistan, according to information reported by Aziz Obidov, Press Secretary of the Supreme Court.
Among them, 92 were fined, 242 were sentenced to correctional work, 4 received compulsory community service, and 110 were placed under restrictions of liberty. Additionally, 3 individuals were given conditional sentences.
Furthermore, 121 people were convicted under Article 139 (slander) of the Criminal Code. Of these, 11 were fined, 14 were sentenced to correctional work, and 92 were given prison sentences, while 4 received conditional sentences.
This update follows the recent law amendments regarding polygamy promotion, where 14 individuals were punished last year for promoting polygamy. The law now includes provisions on promoting cohabitation with multiple wives and discrimination based on gender, with changes effective from October 31, 2023.
