President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, speaking at a public gathering in the “New Uzbekistan” park in the city of New Andijan on April 15, proposed renaming the new city in honor of Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur. The announcement was made by presidential press secretary Sherzod Asadov.

“I am confident that this initiative will resonate deeply with our people. Hazrat Babur is an extraordinary and rare figure in world history. It is only fitting to name not just streets, squares, gardens, and parks after him, but also an entire city.

Babur Mirzo was a worthy successor to the Timurid Renaissance and a great patron of science, culture, art, literature, and talent.

His dedication to establishing peace and justice from a young age, and the bravery he displayed on this path, are a true school of selflessness and patriotism. A beautiful city built in his name is more than justified, even for a single work like the ‘Baburnama,’ a masterpiece that reflects his encyclopedic knowledge and insight,” Mirziyoyev said.

According to Asadov, the proposal has been warmly welcomed by the people of Uzbekistan.

It should be noted that Andijan is the most densely populated region in the country, with 10 percent of Uzbekistan’s population living on just 1 percent of its land. To address this, construction of a new city began in 2021 at the initiative of the head of state. During this visit, the President reviewed the initial results of the project.

The new city is being developed in the Andijan district, on 4,000 hectares of land not used for agriculture. Construction is being carried out in eight stages. So far, 63 residential buildings with 1,770 apartments have been completed. A school with 1,680 seats, a kindergarten for 420 children, and a polyclinic with a capacity of 250 patients have also been built. In addition, a light industrial enterprise and a mortgage center have been established.

President Mirziyoyev toured the region to inspect the newly constructed facilities. It has been reported that most of the completed buildings are already occupied by families, and the joyful atmosphere in the playgrounds reflects the vibrant life emerging in the new city. Construction is progressing rapidly, with 40 more multi-storey buildings and over a thousand new apartments set to be completed this year.

The infrastructure includes all necessary utilities, such as roads, electricity, natural gas, water, and heating. A water storage and distribution system with a capacity of 4,000 cubic meters has been launched to ensure a stable drinking water supply.

The “New Uzbekistan” park, covering 19 hectares, has been landscaped with over 10,000 ornamental trees, shrubs, and flowers. The park features an amphitheater, recreational areas, decorative pathways, cafés, children’s playgrounds, and modern lighting systems, making it one of the highlights of the new city.

Also located within the city is the “Patriotic Park,” which carries significant symbolic meaning. The park includes a monument titled “Oath to the Motherland,” a museum, and concert and performance venues that aim to leave a lasting impression on visitors.

The overall project is ambitious: 2,000 multi-storey residential buildings will be constructed on 1,439 hectares, with trade and service centers also planned. Additionally, 1,820 hectares will be allocated for green spaces. Once completed, the city is expected to accommodate more than 410,000 residents.

New construction and beautification plans were presented during the President’s visit. These include the renovation of the Alisher Navoi recreation park and the installation of a monument to Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur. President Mirziyoyev emphasized the importance of authentically portraying Babur’s image and turning the area into a thematic park dedicated to the Baburid legacy.

The President also visited exhibitions of handicrafts and fine and applied arts in the new park, and proposed launching an annual art festival in Andijan to celebrate local creativity.

For context, the groundbreaking ceremony for New Andijan was held on June 17, 2021. It was attended by elders, youth, and public activists. At the time, President Mirziyoyev called the project a historic event showcasing the creative potential of the Uzbek people.
