Taxi drivers from other regions of Uzbekistan can now operate in Tashkent, provided they obtain the appropriate license and register the capital as their place of business. This was announced on June 13 by the Minister of Transport, Ilhom Makhkamov.

According to the minister, drivers with inter-regional taxi licenses are not permitted to operate in Tashkent. Licenses are currently issued for only one specific region.

As a result, drivers cannot work in both their home region and the capital at the same time.

As previously established by a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers, taxi drivers are allowed to operate only in the region where their vehicle is registered. This regulation sparked public discontent shortly after it was introduced.

In response to the public reaction, the People’s Democratic Party of Uzbekistan submitted an official inquiry to the Minister of Transport. The party questioned the legality of the new restriction on taxi operation without a fixed route, arguing that it contradicts Article 67 of the recently adopted Constitution of Uzbekistan.
