Ambassador Nodirjon Turgunov has officially assumed his role as Uzbekistan’s Permanent Representative to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). He presented his credentials to the OIC Secretary General, Huseyn Ibrahim Taha, as reported by the Dunyo news agency.
During the meeting, the Secretary-General congratulated Turgunov on his appointment and wished him success in his mission. Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between Uzbekistan and the OIC, with an emphasis on education, youth initiatives, and innovation.
The OIC Secretary General highlighted Uzbekistan’s historical contributions to Islamic civilization, including its advancements in science, philosophy, and culture. He noted that the country has been a cornerstone of Islamic heritage and intellectual achievement.
Nodirjon Turgunov, who previously served as Uzbekistan’s Consul General in Aktau, Kazakhstan (2019-2021), and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (2021-2024), succeeds Ulugbek Maqsudov.
Maqsudov has held the dual role of Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Permanent Representative to the OIC since 2018.
For context, earlier this year, Turgunov visited Riyadh in his capacity as Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. His appointment follows Uzbekistan's ongoing efforts to deepen engagement with international organizations and strengthen its global diplomatic presence.
