Nearly 32,000 families in Uzbekistan have divorced since the beginning of this year. The figure was announced on October 14 during a video conference chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, which focused on improving the neighborhood system and organizing local governance more effectively.
The meeting highlighted a range of pressing social issues within communities, particularly those related to the family environment and youth upbringing. It was noted that since the start of the year, around 32,000 families have separated, and nearly 16,000 parents are evading alimony payments. Cases where parents abandon their families with unpaid debts, as well as the negative consequences of early and consanguineous marriages, were said to be alarming concerns that should draw the attention of local authorities, ’’neighborhood sevens,’’ elders, and the broader public.
The President emphasized the importance of explaining to young people that marriage is not only a personal choice but also a serious responsibility toward one’s spouse and children.
It was also stressed that promoting the benefits of prenuptial agreements could help prevent families, especially children, from falling into financial hardship following divorce.
According to the Statistics Agency, in the first half of 2025, about 23,300 couples divorced in Uzbekistan. The majority of these cases occurred in urban areas, 14,100 couples (60.6 percent), while 9,200 divorces (39.4 percent) took place in rural regions. Among regions, Tashkent city recorded the highest number of divorces (1,500), followed by Tashkent and Fergana regions (1,200 each). The lowest figure was observed in Navoi region, with 310 cases.
