By 2030, drinking water coverage in Uzbekistan is expected to reach 85 percent of the population. This is stated in a draft document by the Agency for Strategic Reforms under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan titled “Additional Measures to Consistently Continue Reforms and Advance to a New Stage within the Priority Areas of the Country’s Development until 2030.”
According to the document, Uzbekistan plans to increase the share of the population with regular access to drinking water services to 85 percent.
Specifically, the targets are set as follows:
- 82 percent in 2026;
- 83 percent in 2027;
- 84 percent in 2028;
- 84 percent in 2029;
- 85 percent in 2030.
At the same time, it is planned that by 2030, 100 percent of preschool education institutions and general secondary schools will be provided with clean drinking water and modern sanitation and hygiene infrastructure.
In addition, plans include increasing water use efficiency by 25 percent, ensuring 100 percent installation of water meters for all drinking water consumers, and reducing areas with critically low groundwater levels to 773.4 thousand hectares.
It is also planned to expand the capacity of the Tuyamuyun reservoir by an additional 1 billion cubic meters, improve water supply across 1.2 million hectares, and create drinking water reserves. Measures are also envisaged to develop drought- and water-scarcity-resistant crops, fruit, and grape varieties adapted to the climate of each region, increasing yields by 30–35 percent.
It is worth noting that earlier, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev stated in his address to the Oliy Majlis and the people of Uzbekistan that in 2025, clean drinking water was supplied for the first time to households in 188 mahallas, benefiting around 715,000 residents.
