10913Flood warning systems will be installed in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan with the support of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, made this announcement during the high-level international conference "Water for Sustainable Development" held in Dushanbe.
Azoulay emphasized that one of UNESCO's scientific objectives is to assess the vulnerability of populations to glacier melt. He stated that, this summer, "flood early warning systems will be installed in the Talgar River basin in Kazakhstan, the Pskem River basin in Uzbekistan, and the Aloy Valley in Kyrgyzstan."
"We also plan to implement this system in Tajikistan," he added.
In his speech, Azoulay also referenced a 2022 UNESCO report indicating that by 2050, one-third of the organization's World Heritage sites will have lost their glaciers.
"But we can still take action to protect the remaining two-thirds, as these glaciers represent a common heritage of humanity. Therefore, we must work together," he urged.
Azoulay also thanked Tajikistan's President, Emomali Rahmon, for elevating the issue of glacier conservation to an international discussion.
From June 10-13, the conference "Water for Sustainable Development for 2018-2028" is being held in Dushanbe. The event is attended by politicians, scientists, experts, and representatives from over 100 countries.
