Central Bank chief: Rumors about gold trade with Russia are completely baseless

According to the World Gold Council, Uzbekistan was the only country whose central bank sold gold in September this year.

Data show that central banks purchased a net total of 39 tonnes of gold in September, marking the highest monthly figure of 2025. Overall, 43 tonnes of the precious metal were traded. The largest buyer was the Central Bank of Brazil, which acquired 15 tonnes, followed by Kazakhstan (8 tonnes) and Guatemala (5 tonnes). Smaller purchases were recorded by Russia, Turkey, the Czech Republic, China, and Ghana.

Uzbekistan’s Central Bank was the sole seller, offloading 4 tonnes of gold. Over the year, the country has sold a total of 21 tonnes, surpassing Singapore and Russia to remain the world’s leading gold-selling nation.

Globally, net gold purchases by central banks since the start of the year totaled 200 tonnes, slightly below the 215 tonnes recorded in the same period of 2024.

It is worth noting that in June, Uzbekistan’s Central Bank was the world’s largest gold buyer, purchasing 9 tonnes of gold at that time.
