The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, along with participants of the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference, arrived in Samarkand early on October 29 on the first ’’Paris–Samarkand’’ charter flight.
Officials from the Government of Uzbekistan and the regional administration welcomed high-ranking guests.
For Audrey Azoulay, who has led the organization since 2017, this session will be her final one as UNESCO Director-General. During the Samarkand session, the new Director-General of UNESCO will be officially confirmed. The position will be assumed by 54-year-old Egyptian candidate Khaled El-Anany, who was recently elected at the 222nd session of the UNESCO Executive Board.
It should be noted that the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference is being held in Samarkand from October 30 to November 13, the first time in four decades that the event is taking place outside Paris.
