On April 5, the 39th session of the Women Parliamentarians Forum was launched in Tashkent as part of the 150th-anniversary assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). During the session, Tanzila Norboeva, Chairwoman of Uzbekistan’s Senate of the Oliy Majlis, was elected as the president of the forum. This was reported by the Senate’s press service.

The event saw participation from over 200 parliament members, women leaders, and experts from around the world. Discussions focused on crucial issues such as gender equality, women’s political leadership, and human rights. The forum also celebrated its 40th anniversary, with Tanzila Norboeva assuming the presidency of the 39th session.

According to the IPU's "Women in Parliament" rankings, Uzbekistan is placed 36th out of 193 countries. The forum noted the effectiveness of its current format in addressing critical regional issues related to women, making it a vital mechanism for collaborative solutions.

During the forum, gender perspectives were incorporated into the analysis of resolutions under discussion at the 150th assembly. Participants also deliberated on the role of parliaments in advocating a two-state solution for Palestine and strategies to mitigate the long-term impacts of armed conflicts.

It was reported that 38% of the deputies in Uzbekistan’s Legislative Chamber are women. This achievement not only places Uzbekistan as a leader in female parliamentary representation within the Asian region but also reflects a remarkable increase of 32 percentage points over the past 30 years.

Previously, it was announced that the 150th anniversary of the IPU would be held in Tashkent for the first time in Central Asian history. Scheduled to take place from April 5 to 9 at the Congress Hall in the "Tashkent City" district, the event will host nearly 2,000 delegates from 180 countries, 15 observer nations, and over 25 international and inter-parliamentary organizations. The main theme of the assembly is “Parliamentary Action for Social Justice,” focusing on issues such as poverty alleviation, the creation of decent working conditions, the promotion of social inclusion, and increasing the participation of marginalized groups in decision-making processes.
