An attempt to smuggle gold bars out of Uzbekistan by hiding them in a baby’s diaper has been foiled, the Tashkent Regional Customs Department reported.
According to the report, officers at the Yallama border customs post stopped a citizen leaving Uzbekistan and conducted a standard customs inspection. During the search of the individual’s handbag, authorities discovered two gold bars with a total weight of 111 grams concealed in a baby’s diaper. Preliminary calculations indicate that the total value of the items was approximately 133 million soums.
The customs authorities are currently conducting investigative actions in connection with the case.
For reference, under current legislation, individuals are allowed to carry out of Uzbekistan ready-made silver items weighing up to 200 grams and gold items up to 65 grams without filling out a passenger customs declaration. Quantities exceeding these limits must be declared and are only allowed for export based on the declaration.
It is worth noting that earlier, at the Termiz Airport border customs post in Surkhandarya region, a passenger was stopped while attempting to smuggle five ancient coins out of the country.
