Shavkat Umurzoqov, serving as the interim mayor of Tashkent since March 2023, has been officially confirmed as the mayor, according to a statement from the city's administration press office.
It's worth mentioning that Sherzod Asadov, the President's press secretary, announced earlier that Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the Uzbekistan head, would participate in an extraordinary session of the Tashkent city Council of People's Deputies today, April 3.
For background, Shavkat Umurzoqov, born in 1979, previously held positions including heading the Department for Combating Organized Crime and Corruption at the Prosecutor's Office of Tashkent Region from June 2011 to September 2013, and leading the Department of Combating Organized Crime and Corruption at the General Prosecutor's Office of Uzbekistan from 2013 to 2018. Umurzoqov also served as the chairman of the "Uzavtosanoat" company.
