Italy's Angela Carini refused to continue the fight 46 seconds into her bout against Algeria's Iman Khelief in the women's boxing event at the 2024 Summer Olympics in France, as reported by "Sky News."

According to the publication, Angela Carini could not withstand the strong blows of her opponent during the fight. The Algerian boxer, previously banned from the world championships for failing testosterone and gender tests, won his first fight at the Olympics after his opponent withdrew.

The Italian representative knelt in the ring after the fight and refused to shake Iman Khelief's hand when the decision was announced.

Khelief was disqualified for failing to meet the International Boxing Association's (IBA) eligibility criteria just hours before his gold medal fight at the 2023 World Championships in New Delhi. The Algerian Olympic Committee (SOA) had previously condemned the attacks on Khelief.

Meanwhile, on August 2, in the 57-kilogram weight category, Lin Yui-Tin, a representative of Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), will fight Sitora Turdibekova from Uzbekistan. Two-time world champion Lin was deprived of the bronze medal at the world championships because he could not meet the criteria of the organizers. Both Lin and Khelief are the only two Olympians to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Games without controversy.

"Their passports are written as female. Therefore, discussing their gender is groundless," said Mark Adams, spokesperson of the International Olympic Committee.
