Uzbekistan national team captain Eldor Shomurodov apologized for the unsatisfactory result of the national team, led by Cannavaro, at the World Cup currently taking place in North America. He said this today, July 1, during his speech at the ceremonial welcome event for the national team members.

Shomurodov thanked fans for their support despite the team’s result at the tournament.

“First of all, we would like to express our gratitude to all the fans who came here to meet us and supported us despite such a result, as well as those who supported us while we were in America,” the team captain said.

According to the national team forward, taking part in the World Cup was an achievement for the country’s football.

“All the players gave everything they had at the World Cup. I can say that. Despite the poor result, I think Uzbek football and Uzbekistan benefited from this, because we were able to unite so many people through football. I think that alone is something we can be proud of. Of course, we apologize to everyone for the result,” Eldor said.

For reference, Uzbekistan national team, led by Fabio Cannavaro, lost all three matches in the group stage of the World Cup and conceded a total of 11 goals.

Earlier, it was reported that the goal scored by Uzbekistan national team forward Eldor Shomurodov against DR Congo had been named the best goal of the 2026 World Cup group stage. In that match, the national team lost 3-1 to DR Congo.
