Geopolitical and geoeconomic contradictions, regional conflicts, and the escalating effects of climate change are becoming a major challenge for all nations. This was stated by the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, during his speech at the informal summit of the heads of state and government of the Turkic States Organization, held today, May 21, in Budapest, Hungary.

“Today’s summit is taking place in the context of a rapidly changing global landscape and complex, unpredictable developments,” the president noted in his opening remarks.

He called on the leaders of the Turkic states to strengthen their unity and coordinate their positions on addressing the most pressing global challenges.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev once again emphasized the importance of resolving major conflicts through international law and in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.

“We support practical efforts aimed at resolving the situation around Ukraine through diplomacy and negotiations. I would like to especially acknowledge the commendable efforts of His Excellency President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey in this regard,” said Mirziyoyev.

The Uzbek president also voiced deep concern over the violation of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza and the resumption of hostilities.

“A just solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict cannot be achieved without the implementation of the ‘two states for two peoples’ principle,” he stated.

Mirziyoyev further addressed the issue of Afghanistan. He stressed that global and regional security cannot be discussed without considering the ongoing crisis in that country and called for collective solutions.

“The adoption of a joint statement on Afghanistan reflects the serious attention our organization is giving to this matter,” he said.

It should be noted that the informal summit of the Turkic States Organization, held for the first time in Europe, brought together Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan, President Sadyr Japarov of Kyrgyzstan, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan, and TSO Secretary General Kubanichbek Omuraliev.

Officials from two countries with observer status—Turkmenistan and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus—did not attend the summit.

The following documents were signed and adopted by the Council of Heads of State:

• Budapest Declaration of the Informal Summit of the Turkic States Organization
• Resolution on the Participation of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the Turkic Culture and Heritage Fund
• Resolution on the Extension of the Term of Office of the TSO Secretary General
• Statement of the Council of Heads of State on Afghanistan
