President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited Victory Park in Tashkent on May 8, the presidential press service reported.

The head of state took part in a remembrance ceremony organized at the park to mark the occasion. In line with tradition, President Mirziyoyev laid a wreath at the “Ode to Fortitude” monument.

“Today, we express our special affection and respect to the war and labor veterans who are still living among us, as well as to all our elders. It would be fair to say that this complex is a sacred place that honors the courage and heroism of our multinational people, who made a worthy contribution to the great victory,” the President said.

According to the data, nearly 2 million people from Uzbekistan took part in the bloody battles against fascism, at a time when the country’s population stood at 6.8 million. Of them, about 540,000 were killed, 158,000 went missing, more than 50,000 died as a result of severe torture and suffering in concentration camps, and over 60,000 returned disabled.

Representatives of the Armed Forces of Uzbekistan, state and public organizations, neighborhood activists and elders also attended the event and laid flowers at the memorial.

President Mirziyoyev also visited the “Devoted Sons of the Nation” alley in Victory Park and paid tribute to the memory of servicemen and law enforcement officers who died defending the country during the years of independence.

“It is no coincidence that a year ago we established the ‘Devoted Sons of the Nation’ memorial complex here. It reminds us that defending the homeland is the sacred duty of every generation and reflects the continuity of patriotic traditions,” the President said.

The head of state expressed deep gratitude to the parents for raising brave and courageous children as true patriots.
