Military actions against the Islamic Republic of Iran last month risked drawing the entire region into a war and triggering a large-scale ecological disaster. This was stated by President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev during the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) summit held in Khokand, Azerbaijan, on July 4.
“Our summit today is taking place in a difficult time, as the global community is facing an acute crisis.
In particular, the fact that most of the conflicts and disputes are occurring within the territory of our Organization is clear proof of this. The recent developments in South Asia and the Middle East are of deep concern to us all,” the Uzbek leader said.
He emphasized that the erosion of international law and the weakening of global security institutions are further undermining dialogue and cooperation, paving the way for force and violence. Mirziyoyev noted that the military attacks on Iran—a member of the ECO—threaten to plunge the region into war and cause serious environmental damage.
“We welcome the ceasefire agreement reached between Iran and Israel. We consider this decision a crucial step toward easing tensions in the region and restoring stability.
We believe that the agreement will lay a solid foundation for resolving all issues through diplomatic and constructive negotiations,” the President added.
Mirziyoyev also called on the international community to expand the geography of nuclear-weapon-free zones, emphasizing that non-proliferation and refraining from the use of nuclear weapons remain among the most urgent issues of global security.
“It should be noted that peace and stability in the Middle East cannot be achieved without a fair solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
We support a complete cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip, the removal of all barriers to humanitarian aid for people suffering from hunger and inhumane conditions, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state by United Nations resolutions,” he concluded.
The Iran–Israel Conflict
The conflict lasted from June 13 to June 24. It began with Israel launching airstrikes on Iranian territory, prompting Iran to retaliate with attacks on Israel. On the night of June 22, the United States intervened by bombing Iranian nuclear facilities. The following day, Iran responded by targeting a U.S. military base in Qatar.
Before the conflict, the United States and Iran had been engaged in negotiations over a new nuclear agreement. Israel stated that it launched the operation because Tehran was nearing the capability to build a nuclear weapon—a concern echoed by Washington. Iran, however, has maintained that it does not seek to develop nuclear weapons and has the right to a peaceful nuclear program.
