Convicted prisoners in Uzbekistan have been granted the right to use remote video calls. The provision is set out in the law adopted on January 15 titled “On Amendments and Additions to the Criminal Enforcement Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan Aimed at Creating the Possibility of Conducting Remote Video Meetings for Prisoners Serving Sentences in Penal Institutions.”

The law introduces amendments to the Criminal Enforcement Code establishing the right of prisoners sentenced to deprivation of liberty to use remote video communication.

Under the amendments, prisoners are entitled to one remote video call or telephone conversation lasting up to 15 minutes, paid for from their personal funds.

Previously, prisoners were only entitled to one telephone conversation lasting up to 15 minutes.

The law enters into force from the date of its official publication.
