We must dry up luxury and pomp to defeat corruption – Mirziyoyev

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev stated that luxury and pomp must be eradicated to combat corruption. He made this remark on March 5 at an expanded meeting dedicated to assessing the effectiveness of anti-corruption efforts and outlining future priorities.

"To defeat corruption, first of all, we must dry up its 'roots'—excessive luxury and pomp. The saddest part is that prominent figures are increasingly engaging in such practices, pushing people to aspire to their level. Unfortunately, some leaders, instead of setting an example with their modest lifestyles, fall prey to these false values and seek illegal income," the President said.

The head of state urged parliamentary chambers, local councils, public representatives and neighborhood leaders to work together and intensify awareness campaigns among the population.

The President also called on civil society organizations and public representatives to play an active role.

"The fight against corruption is a national duty, requiring the conscientious efforts of every patriotic citizen. No one should be left out of this process. We must create more opportunities to foster intolerance towards corruption and actively involve the public. Strengthening the role of non-governmental organizations is the best approach," Mirziyoyev emphasized.

It was proposed that parliament work closely with NGOs and leverage their capabilities. For instance, involving NGOs in monitoring compliance with the Convention against Corruption was deemed highly effective. To support these initiatives, 10 billion sums will be allocated annually for new projects.

"If we all unite in the fight against corruption, we will certainly achieve greater positive results. Therefore, mahalla activists, intellectuals, writers, artists, entrepreneurs, public figures, leaders, deputies, and senators—indeed, the entire community—must treat corruption as a 'cancer in the body of society.' Today's tasks are aimed at fostering this spirit and delivering concrete outcomes. I trust that you will understand this truth, show dedication in implementing these initiatives, and set an example for others," the President concluded.

During the meeting, opinions and proposals from parliament members, sector representatives, and regional officials were heard, along with reports from relevant authorities.
