16454The Parvomai District Court in Bishkek has acquitted all individuals charged with organizing mass riots related to the transfer of the Campirabad reservoir to Uzbekistan, as reported by TASS citing the court office.
"All the accused in this case have been acquitted by the judge's decision," stated a court office representative.
In October 2022, a group of Kyrgyz politicians, including national parliament members, former high-ranking officials, and notable public figures, established a committee opposing the transfer of the Campirabad reservoir to Uzbekistan amid border demarcation and delimitation efforts.
Law enforcement agencies in the Republic arrested and detained 27 committee members, accusing them of planning mass riots. Among the suspects were Azimbek Beknazarov, the former chief prosecutor, Mambetjunus Abilov, the former head of the Central Election Commission, and Ravsha Jeenbekov, a former deputy and minister.
In January 2023, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan finalized the demarcation of their shared border. The bilateral agreements on disputed territories resulted in approximately 19,000 hectares being allocated to Kyrgyzstan and 4,500 hectares to Uzbekistan, including the Campirabad (Andijan) reservoir, constructed in 1983. Future management of the reservoir's water reserves will be conducted on an equal basis as per the agreements.
