7930On April 23, a strong earthquake in Istanbul, Turkey, resulted in the tragic death of an Uzbek citizen, according to Uzbekistan’s Consulate General in Istanbul.
Preliminary reports indicate that the incident occurred when the victim, who was on an upper floor during the earthquake, suffered severe panic, leading to their untimely death.
The Consulate General has stated that necessary legal and logistical steps are being taken to repatriate the body to Uzbekistan.
At 12:49 PM local time, Istanbul experienced a 6.2-magnitude earthquake off the Silivri coast, which was felt across neighboring provinces. The epicenter was located 6.99 kilometers underground.
Following the initial earthquake:
- Ten aftershocks ranging from 3.1 to 4.9 magnitude were recorded.
- A 5.9-magnitude tremor followed at 12:51 PM.
- Subsequent quakes of 4.4, 4.8, 4.5, and 4.9 magnitude occurred.
- By 1:07 PM, the tremors began to decrease, ranging from 3.4 to 3.1 magnitude.
Experts warned that aftershocks may continue.
During the earthquake, 151 individuals were injured after jumping from heights in panic and were later hospitalized.
The Governor of Istanbul confirmed that no official fatalities were reported as a direct result of the quake. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan’s Consulate General assured that it remains in constant communication with local emergency services and that no Uzbek citizens were among the injured.
Earlier reports noted that after consecutive earthquakes, many Istanbul residents were seeking to leave the city, causing a sharp rise in airline ticket prices. Additionally, schools and universities in Istanbul suspended classes for two days due to the seismic activity.
