Uzbekistan is drafting a resolution to introduce new tariffs for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, the Ministry of Energy announced on January 2.

Under the proposed changes, EV charging stations will face higher tariffs during peak hours – from 6:00 to 10:00 in the morning and from 17:00 to 22:00 in the evening – while nighttime rates will be discounted by 50%. However, the ministry has not disclosed the exact increase during peak hours.

Deputy Minister of Energy, Umid Mamadaminov, addressed concerns about recent disconnections of EV charging stations. According to Mamadaminov, inspections conducted in mid-December revealed that some stations failed to meet technical requirements. As a result, several stations were temporarily disconnected.

Following intervention by the Ministry of Energy, stations that did not show operational issues were promptly reconnected. Eleven stations facing technical or documentation problems were granted time to resolve them and have since been reconnected. Mamadaminov confirmed that as of now, all charging stations in Tashkent are operational.

The Deputy Minister emphasized that businesses hosting EV charging stations must update their technical conditions by coordinating with regional power networks. Currently, Uzbekistan has around 1,000 operational charging stations, with over 500 in Tashkent. However, only 103 of these stations have fulfilled the necessary technical conditions.

By November 1, 2024, Uzbekistan had imported 5,417 EV charging stations, all of which must secure technical permits by the end of the year. Mamadaminov assured that these regulations will not lead to power shortages or voltage drops affecting other consumers.

In related news, Uzbekistan plans to introduce a disposal fee for EV batteries starting in 2025. This fee will apply to importers and local manufacturers of electric vehicle batteries.
