Andijan devzira pilaf has been registered as a geographical indication, the Intellectual Property Agency reported.
According to the agency, Andijan devzira pilaf is a national dish distinguished by centuries-old culinary traditions, a unique preparation method and a distinctive taste. This type of pilaf is mainly prepared using the famous devzira rice grown in the Fergana Valley.
Devzira rice is known for its reddish color, dense, high-quality grains and its ability to give pilaf a distinctive flavor, aroma and separate-grain texture.
The agency said the geographical indication status will help legally protect the name Andijan devzira pilaf and its traditional preparation technology, preserve the product’s uniqueness and strengthen quality guarantees.
The status is also expected to promote Andijan region’s gastronomic potential, support the development of national brands and tourism, and help popularize Uzbek culinary culture internationally.
For reference, a geographical indication is an intellectual property object confirming that a product is linked to a specific region and that its quality and reputation are closely connected with the natural and social factors of that area.
Earlier, Sofi pilaf, a national dish associated with Bukhara region, was also registered as a geographical indication. Other registered geographical indications in Uzbekistan include Gijduvon shashlik, Guzor tandir meat, Samarkand bread, Khorezm tukhumbarak, Andijan skullcap, Suqoq samsa, Samarkand nokhat shurak, Samarkand paper, Zomin kazan patir and Baliq qarma.
