5776Akmal Saidov, the Director of Uzbekistan's National Center for Human Rights, has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Committee, as reported by the "Dunyo" news agency.
On May 29, during the 40th session of the member states of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights at the UN headquarters in New York, elections were conducted to choose nine members for the Human Rights Committee for the term 2025-2028.
Candidates from 16 other countries, including Burundi, Georgia, Egypt, India, Spain, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Lithuania, Morocco, Paraguay, South Korea, North Macedonia, Togo, Croatia, Ethiopia, and South Africa, also competed for the nine available seats alongside Uzbekistan.
In the secret ballot, Akmal Saidov, Director of the National Center for Human Rights in Uzbekistan, received the highest number of votes from the member countries of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
The election of Akmal Saidov to the Human Rights Committee is a historic milestone, marking Uzbekistan as the first Central Asian country to gain membership in this principal UN body.
The Human Rights Committee is an independent group of UN experts responsible for overseeing the implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights by its member states, which number 173. Uzbekistan became a member of this pact in 1995. The committee's work focuses on ensuring the full respect of all civil and political rights.
