In a statement issued by the US Embassy in Tashkent on the occasion of the Day of Memory and Honor, Russian military operations in Ukraine were compared to the Second World War.

“On this Day of Memory and Honor, we congratulate the people of Uzbekistan on the 77th anniversary of the victory of the allied troops over Nazism in the Second World War.  Today, we celebrate and honor the contributions and sacrifices of more than 530,000 Uzbeks, who served in the Soviet Army with the United States, Britain and other allies as part of the 34 million soldiers. We have great respect for them, their families and their descendants.

At a time when 9 May is being celebrated as a victory for peace and freedom, unfortunately, we still see a horrific form of military action today, as was the case before in 1945: that is, a State is now subjugating its neighbor by trying to occupy its territory by force.  We will never allow our world to return to such a dark and dangerous past.  Therefore, we condemn such acts of aggression and recognize the courage of all people striving to defend their independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity”, the statement of the U.S embassy said.

According to the reports of the US diplomatic mission, more than 530,000 Uzbeks, along with the United States, Britain and other allies, made a worthy contribution to the victory over fascism.

“Today, we remember the common history of Uzbekistan and the USA in the fight against oppression. We wish the proud people of independent Uzbekistan strength, health, peace, and prosperity”, – the official reports says.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also congratulated the people of Uzbekistan on the Day of Memory and Honor, which is celebrated in Russia as Victory Day.
“77 years ago, thanks to the courage and heroism of the soldiers and partisans of the front, the perseverance and dedication of the workers of the front, fascism, which wanted to enslave Europe and brought pain and suffering to tens of millions of people, was defeated.  The common victory became the guarantee of our life and our freedom”- the Russian leader said.

The press service under the president of the Republic of Uzbekistan briefly reported on Putin's congratulations.  There are no reports that President Mirziyoyev has sent a congratulatory message to Moscow.
