On July 10, a 37-year-old man from Uzbekistan was sentenced to one month in prison in the United States for providing false information to federal law enforcement. This announcement came from the district attorney's office in New Haven, Connecticut.

The individual, identified as S.M., emigrated from Uzbekistan to the USA in February 2009. He settled in New Britain, Connecticut, and obtained legal residency in September 2010. On May 27, 2013, he traveled to Istanbul, during which he discovered that his brother had been killed in the Syrian civil war.

When FBI special agents questioned him about his trip to Turkey and his brother, he repeatedly lied. He falsely claimed his brother was alive and residing in either Turkey or Dubai, that he met his brother during the trip, and that his brother had sent him a package. He also denied knowing his brother's whereabouts or being aware of any rumors about Uzbeks in the USA traveling to Syria to fight.

“In reality, he knew his brother had traveled to Syria from the USA and died in the civil war,” the report stated.

In early July 2013, authorities found several videos and photos on his phone showing his brother in Syria, including footage of him handling weapons in military attire and images of his death.

The report stated, "The jury convicted the Uzbek man of making false statements to law enforcement and sentenced him to one month in prison followed by one year of supervised release.”
