5761A protocol for starting work on the construction site of the future low-power nuclear power plant was signed between the state enterprise "Directorate of Construction of Nuclear Power Plants" under the "Uzatom" agency and JSC "Atomstroyexport" (ASE JSC, the engineering division of the state corporation "Rosatom"). This was reported by the Uzatom press service.
The document was signed in the presence of Azim Ahmedkhadjaev, Director of the Atomic Energy Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and Nikolay Spassky, Deputy General Director of the Rosatom state corporation and Director of the International Activity Block.
According to Otabek Amanov, Director of the Nuclear Power Plant Construction Department at the Uzatom agency, the signing of this document marks significant progress in the implementation of Uzbekistan’s first nuclear power plant. Shortly, work will commence directly on the construction site.
"The protocol signed today confirms the fulfillment of the priority regulatory and financial obligations of the parties. Rosatom's engineering division is actively developing documents to obtain a license for the placement of nuclear power plants and conducting site investigations," said Pavel Bezrukov, Director of ASE's Nuclear Power Plant Construction Projects in Central Asia.
It was reported that preliminary work on the NPP project began in the summer. In June, the first Construction Headquarters meeting was held at the future NPP site. At the end of August, work began on creating a temporary camp for the builders of the future nuclear power plant.
"This is the first step towards the comprehensive development of the area surrounding the nuclear power plant. Cultural and educational projects, medical facilities, residential areas, industrial enterprises, and commercial organizations will be developed," the statement said.
For reference, the contract signed on May 27, 2024, provides for the construction of a nuclear power plant with a total capacity of 330 MW (6 reactors of 55 MW each) in the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan, based on a Russian design. JSC "Atomstroyexport" (the engineering division of Rosatom State Corporation) is the main contractor for the construction of the plant, with local companies also participating.
It is worth noting that the agreement between Uzbekistan and Russia on the construction of the NPP has already come into force.
