Earlier reports indicated that a 7-year-old girl in the Yangikurgan district of the Namangan region was sexually assaulted by her 38-year-old relative. The Namangan regional department of Internal Affairs has now commented on the incident.

According to the statement, on October 14 at 10:00 pm, the Namangan regional department of Internal Affairs received a report from the Yangikurgan district medical association. The report stated that at around 9:00 pm on the same day, an unidentified man attending a family wedding at a local residence allegedly sexually assaulted a minor girl born in 2018.

During urgent investigative and search measures, the suspect, born in 1987 and previously convicted, was identified and apprehended.

The Yangikurgan district investigation department under the Ministry of Internal Affairs has initiated a criminal case under Article 118, part 4 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Offenses against honor). A preventive measure of pre-trial detention has been applied against the accused.

’’All relevant forensic examinations have been assigned, and preliminary investigative actions are currently underway,’’ the statement added.

It is worth noting that the Children’s Ombudsman, Surayo Rahmonova, earlier confirmed that she is monitoring the case within the scope of her legal authority to ensure the rights and interests of the child are protected.
