Wholesale purchase and sale of gas and electricity in 14 regions will be transferred to a private operator

In fourteen cities and districts of Uzbekistan, the function of wholesale purchase and sale of natural gas and electricity will be transferred to a private operator without increasing tariffs for the population. This is stated in the decree of the president of Uzbekistan «On further reforms to improve the business environment and create conditions for sustainable economic growth through the development of the private sector».

According to the decree, considering that the main networks of JSC "National Electric Networks of Uzbekistan" and JSC "Uztransgaz" will be fully owned by the state, within two months, the Cabinet of Ministers will provide the obtaining of an international credit rating by JSC "National Electricity Networks of Uzbekistan" until the end of 2023, by JSC "Uztransgaz" until the end of 2024 and achievement of independent attraction of fund from international banks and capital markets in strict compliance with financial discipline.

Also, on the basis of conclusions of international financial institutions and consultants, the government will make a decision on the improvement of the operation of JSC «Hududgazta’minot» and JSC «Regional Electricity Networks» until September 1, 2022, including increasing their operational efficiency, attracting the private sector to the field and as an experiment, transfer the function of wholesale purchase and sale of natural gas and electricity to a private operator, initially in fourteen cities and districts, without increasing the tariffs for the population.
