Japanese Prime Minister sends letter to Mirziyoyev

On February 7, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev received a delegation led by Akihisa Nagashima, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister of Japan. The presidential press service reported on the meeting.  

During the talks, both sides discussed pressing issues related to strengthening Uzbekistan-Japan relations, expanding strategic and multifaceted cooperation, and deepening practical partnerships. Special Advisor Akihisa Nagashima conveyed greetings and a personal letter from Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to President Mirziyoyev.  

Japan reaffirmed its view of Uzbekistan as a reliable, long-term strategic partner in promoting free and open international cooperation based on the rule of law. The Japanese government also emphasized its strong appreciation for the rapid development of bilateral ties across various sectors, including:  

- Economic and innovative collaboration
- Energy, industrial, and infrastructure projects  
- Educational and cultural exchanges
- Tourism and labor migration programs
- Regional cooperation

According to the report, in 2024, trade between Uzbekistan and Japan increased by 35%. The portfolio of joint projects with leading Japanese companies and financial institutions has surpassed $12 billion. Additionally, around 100 joint ventures and organizations, including the Uzbekistan-Japan Center, are actively operating in Uzbekistan.  

President Mirziyoyev highlighted the importance of maintaining high-level dialogues and mutual visits to further enhance bilateral cooperation. The agenda for collaboration in trade, investment, financial, and technical sectors—including projects under Japan’s Development Assistance Program—remains extensive.  

The Uzbek leader also extended his best wishes to the Japanese government for the successful hosting of Expo 2025, set to begin in Osaka this April. Both sides exchanged views on regional cooperation, particularly in preparation for the upcoming first-ever Central Asia + Japan Summit.
