42 household waste landfills closed in Uzbekistan (video)

In Uzbekistan, 42 household waste landfills have been closed, and the land has been restored to nature. This was reported by the Agency for Waste Management and Circular Economy Development.
According to the agency, the Directorate for Waste Landfill Management has carried out work across various regions to reduce the number of waste disposal sites.
In total, 47 household waste landfills have been reclaimed and covered with soil layers in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, and in the regions of Andijan, Bukhara, Kashkadarya, Namangan, Samarkand, Tashkent, Fergana, and Khorezm during 2024 and the first part of 2025.
The 2024 figures are as follows:
- Republic of Karakalpakstan – 1 landfill (11 hectares)
- Andijan region – 6 (14.9 ha)
- Bukhara region – 1 (0.5 ha)
- Kashkadarya region – 5 (19.15 ha)
- Namangan region – 3 (5.38 ha)
- Samarkand region – 1 (2.4 ha)
- Tashkent region – 3 (9.58 ha)
- Fergana region – 6 (17.11 ha)
- Khorezm region – 1 (1 ha)
In 2025, reclamation and soil covering work was planned and completed at 18 household waste landfills across the country, covering a total area of 81.68 hectares.
In general, out of 185 household waste landfills occupying 1,446.04 hectares nationwide, 47 have been reclaimed and covered with soil layers.
Additionally, the operation of 42 waste collection sites has been terminated, returning nearly 90 hectares of land back to nature.
It is worth noting that earlier, the city of Samarkand launched Uzbekistan’s first underground waste storage container system.
