Authorities uncover massive energy resource theft in Uzbekistan

On May 13, authorities uncovered 301 cases of energy resource losses and 481 instances of embezzlement totaling 3 billion UZS, according to the General Prosecutor’s Office.
Under the leadership of Deputy Prosecutor General Shohrux Aminov, working groups are implementing measures to reduce natural gas and electricity transmission losses, enhance energy efficiency, and prevent unauthorized resource consumption.
In response to these issues, authorities have:
- Replaced 5 gas distribution points and repaired 360 others;
- Upgraded 1,841 homes with a two-phase system;
- Replaced 4,982 gas meter batteries and restored connections for 2,900 gas meters;
- Installed 12 new transformers and repaired 169 transformer units;
- Upgraded 238 km of networks and replaced 20 km of high-load power lines;
- Officials initiated administrative and disciplinary proceedings against 11 individuals, and 6 criminal cases have been opened for further investigation.
Authorities emphasize that operations to prevent fraud and resource theft will continue, aiming to strengthen transparency in Uzbekistan’s energy sector.
Previously, an investigation in Koson district, Kashkadarya region, uncovered illegal use of electricity valued at 1.2 billion UZS at a water collection facility.
