Onion export in Uzbekistan was temporarily limited

Onion export in Uzbekistan will be temporarily limited for 4 months from 1 January 2023.

Zafar Artykov, the head of the main department of agro-technologies of the Ministry of Agriculture, announced this at a briefing held at the Information and Mass Communications Agency.

As a result of the abnormal cold, the onion products stored in some outdoor stalls in the farmers' markets were frozen, and the supply, i.e., the volume of bringing products to the market, decreased due to unfavorable weather conditions.

In our country, to reduce the price of the domestic market, to satisfy the consumption demand of the population, and to ensure food safety, a temporary restriction has been imposed on the export of onions for 4 months from 1 January 2023," said Zafar Artikov.

Also, today it was confirmed that there are 319 thousand tons of onion products in the region, and it was said that there are onion reserves in the region.

However, experts' analyzes show that 26,500 tons of onions are needed in addition to the existing stock within the framework of population demand.

In order not to observe a shortage of onion products in the country, negotiations are being conducted with industry partners in foreign countries regarding the import of this product.

Consequently, the information published by the State Statistics Committee as of 11 January this year, it was written that the minimum-maximum prices of 1 kilogram of onions in the markets of Uzbekistan are around 3500-7000 soms.

However, there are reports on social networks that the price of onions has increased sharply and is being sold for around 8,000-10,000 soms.

As of 1 January 2022, the average price of 1 kg of onions in the markets of the Republic was 1500-4000 soms.

During the analysis in March 2020, it was found that onions sold for 4,300 soms in one of the farmers' markets in Urganch are the most expensive in the Republic.
