Uzbekistan has signed agreements on two strategic projects funded by the European Union, according to the EU Delegation to Uzbekistan.

The strong partnership between Uzbekistan and the European Union was further reinforced during the visit of Joseph Sikela, Commissioner for International Cooperation. The discussions focused on the Global Gateway strategy, with particular emphasis on expanding digital connectivity, promoting stability, creating jobs through the development of essential raw materials, and boosting trade via the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor. The role of the Global Gateway in supporting infrastructure and clean energy solutions was also highlighted.

As part of the "European Community Initiative for Digital Connectivity in Central Asia", Commissioner Sikela witnessed the signing of agreements on two key projects funded by the European Union.

The "Connect Central Asia (C4CA)" project aims to enhance digital infrastructure and integration across the region. It is designed to strengthen connectivity between Central Asian countries, fostering cooperation and economic exchange. By advancing digital integration, the project will support economic growth, improve access to online services, and help bridge the digital divide in the region.

The "Satellite Connectivity for the Population of Remote Areas of Central Asia" project seeks to provide high-speed internet access to remote and underserved areas. This initiative will expand digital opportunities in education, healthcare, and economic development for rural populations with limited or no reliable internet access. The project aligns with the European Union’s broader goal of inclusive digital connectivity, ensuring equal access to essential services and enabling citizens to participate in the digital economy.

“The European Union and Uzbekistan are working together to enhance internet connectivity across Central Asia. European technology, combined with Uzbek expertise, will allow more people to access fast and secure internet, support businesses, create new jobs, and improve living conditions for local communities. By investing in digital connectivity, we are closing gaps, creating opportunities, and ensuring that Central Asia fully benefits from the digital economy,” stated Commissioner Sikela.

During his visit, Sikela also toured the Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Complex to explore opportunities for sustainable resource development and responsible investment in key raw materials.

“The Global Gateway Strategy demonstrates the European Union’s commitment to closing global investment gaps by strengthening sustainable connections in the digital, energy, and transport sectors, as well as advancing education and research systems. Between 2021 and 2027, this initiative aims to attract €300 billion in public and private investment to drive sustainable global growth and deeper cooperation,” the report stated.

It should be recalled that Joseph Sikela previously visited Uzbekistan, where he was received by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. During their meeting, they discussed pressing issues related to the further development of multifaceted relations between Uzbekistan and the European Union.
