Uzbekistan will provide over 900 million cubic meters of water to Kazakhstan

During the irrigation season, Kazakhstan receives 922 million cubic meters of water from Uzbekistan via the "Dostlik" canal, as reported by the Ministry of Water Management and Irrigation of Kazakhstan.

Nurjon Nurjigitov, Kazakhstan's Minister of Water Management and Irrigation, took part in the 86th meeting of the Interstate Water Management Coordinating Commission, comprising Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

Following the meeting, the minister agreed to allocate 922 million cubic meters of water from the "Dostlik" interstate canal to Kazakhstan for the irrigation season.

Simultaneously, the Shardara reservoir in the Turkestan region accumulated 4.8 billion cubic meters of water. Additionally, the Toqtogul Reservoir in Kyrgyzstan amassed 8 billion cubic meters of water, utilized for irrigation in southern Kazakhstan.

The meeting also approved the forecasted schedule for the utilization of the Norin-Syrdarya cascade reservoirs until September 30 of this year. Additionally, discussions were held on the activities under the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, a responsibility chaired by Kazakhstan since the year's commencement, with all organizational tasks successfully completed.

Furthermore, progress continues on drafting the agreement for establishing a cooperation mechanism in water and energy across Central Asian nations.

"Our primary task at present is to collect floodwater. We direct it towards various destinations such as the Caspian Sea, Balkhash, and Qamish-Samar lakes, from the Ulitov region to the lakes of the Kyzylorda region, and so forth. However, it's crucial to ensure water supply to the southern regions as well. In this context, water diplomacy is important,” Nurjon Nurjigitov emphasizes.

The upcoming session of the Interstate Water Management Coordinating Commission is scheduled to convene in Turkmenistan this September.
