Uzbekistan and Afghanistan sign a contract on electricity worth $243 million

Four contracts amounting to $243 million on constructing power transmission lines and substations have been signed between Afghanistan’s “Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat” (DABS) and the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan. This was announced on DABS’s online website. 

The contracts have been signed for the following major projects to provide essential electricity services in Afghanistan and deliver them to consumers: 

- Extension of the 500 kV Surkhandarya–Dasht-Alwan power transmission line with a capacity of 1,000 MW; 

- Expansion of the Argandeh substation with a capacity of 800 MVA; 

- Construction of the Shaikh Mesri substation in Nangarhar Province; 

- Expansion of the 220 kV Kabul–Nangarhar (Shaikh Mesri) power transmission line. 

 The signing ceremony was attended by Mulla Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban’s acting deputy prime minister for economic affairs, Mawlawi Ahmad Jon Belal, the head of the State Corporations Main Directorate, and other representatives alongside various media agencies. During the ceremony, Abdul Bari Uman, the CEO of DABS, stressed the importance of ensuring a reliable electricity supply throughout the country. According to his statement, these projects will help develop commercial, industrial, and agricultural relations and ultimately pave the way for significant national development. 

Likewise, Jurabek Mirzamahmudov, the Minister of Energy, stated in his speech that these major projects are the result of strong cooperation and the continuous efforts of the leaders of the two friendly nations. He also said that the two countries will work together to implement these projects. 

At the same ceremony, a 10-year electricity purchase agreement was signed between DABS and Uzbek companies.
