Uzbekistan’s 2024 debt to Russia revealed

Last year, the debt owed to Russia by 38 countries increased to 33.1 billion dollars, the highest level since 1998. The report was published by RIA Novosti, citing World Bank data.
According to the figures, in 2024 this indicator rose by 2.6 billion dollars, reaching 33.1 billion dollars. The last time the debt to Russia reached a comparable level was in 1998, when it stood at 38 billion dollars.
Bangladesh became the largest borrower last year, increasing its debt by 1.2 billion dollars. Egypt raised its debt by 815 million dollars, while India’s debt grew by 799 million dollars. Uzbekistan increased its debt by 39 million dollars, Afghanistan by 17 million dollars, Yemen by 7 million dollars, and Sri Lanka by 3 million dollars.
Belarus recorded the biggest reduction in debt obligations, decreasing its amount by 125 million dollars.
In September, it was reported that Georgia had fully repaid its longstanding debt to Russia. By the end of 2024, Georgia’s total public debt amounted to 1.56 billion dollars, of which 156.9 million dollars was owed to Russia.
Earlier, it was reported that Uzbekistan’s total external debt had reached 72.2 billion dollars. Of this amount, public external debt accounted for 36.8 billion dollars, while corporate external debt stood at 35.4 billion dollars. Neighboring Kyrgyzstan’s current public debt amounts to 8.4 billion dollars, 62 percent of which—5.2 billion dollars—is external debt.
