Uzbekistan Airways suspends flights over Russian airspace to Europe

Concerns over airspace safety in Russia have led Uzbekistan Airways to reroute its flights to European destinations, avoiding Russian airspace. The decision was announced on January 28 by Shukhrat Khudoykulov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Uzbekistan Airways Joint-Stock Company.

According to Khudoykulov, the airline has reassessed its European flight routes to prioritize passenger safety. Following consultations with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), Uzbekistan Airways has redirected its flights through Turkey and Azerbaijan instead of Russian airspace, effective January 20.

“As a result of this change, flight durations have increased by 30 to 40 minutes, leading to additional operational costs. However, we have decided not to raise ticket prices and will cover these expenses ourselves,” Khudoykulov stated.

He further emphasized that passengers will not bear any extra costs due to this adjustment.

“This is a force majeure situation, and we believe that passengers should not have to pay for it,” he added.

The decision aligns with recommendations from international aviation organizations regarding air safety concerns in Russian airspace.
