On November 30, at the congress of the International Fencing Federation (FIE) held in Tashkent, Russian businessman Alisher Usmanov was re-elected as the president of the organization.
Usmanov had registered his candidacy for the presidency in October, facing competition from Swedish candidate Otto Drakenberg. In the end, Usmanov’s candidacy was approved, and he was once again elected to lead the global fencing body.
For reference, Usmanov previously served as the president and patron of the FIE from 2008 until March 2022. His tenure was cut short when he was subjected to international sanctions, which forced him to step down from his position. His return to the presidency marks a significant development for the organization.
Additionally, it is worth noting that Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the President of Uzbekistan, serves as the head of the National Olympic Committee of Uzbekistan, with Otabek Umarov as his first deputy.
