12 ancient gates of Tashkent will be restored

A working group from the administration of Tashkent city has started to restore 12 ancient gates of the capital.  This is reported by the press service under the city administration.

It is noted that this year, two out of the twelve old gates will be restored.  Experts discussed the need to intensify work with a detailed concept.  It is assured that the gates will be restored in a clear historical manner with the involvement of experienced historians and archaeologists.  

For reference, until the middle of the 19th century, Tashkent was surrounded by a fortress wall with 12 gates, named after the ancient name of the district or direction:

Labzak, Takhtapul, Karasaray, Sagban, Chagatay, Kukcha, Samarkand, Kamalan, Beshagach, Koymas, Kokand and Kashgar.  Each of the gates was guarded by sentries who collected taxes from trade caravans arriving in Tashkent.
