On January 23, an 8-year-old boy tragically died after being struck by a Damas car in the Termez district of Surkhandarya region. The regional Road Safety Department reported the incident.

The accident occurred on the 1610th kilometer of the M-41 highway, in the area of Karakhan mahalla, Termez district. The driver of the Damas vehicle was traveling in the "Termez-Shorchi" direction when he hit the boy, who was crossing the road. Despite receiving medical assistance, the boy passed away in the ambulance on the same day. The victim was a 1st grader at School No. 17 in Termez district.

This tragic incident comes amid troubling statistics: in 2024, 2,203 people lost their lives and 8,901 were injured in 9,364 road accidents across Uzbekistan. According to Senator Kutbiddin Burhonov, chairman of the Committee on Defense and Security, studies have shown that the current traffic violation laws lack sufficient deterrents, with the absence of effective punishment being one of the primary reasons for the rise in road accidents.
