Renowned writer and translator Bobokhon Muhammad Sharif passes away

Yesterday, February 5, Bobokhon Muhammad Sharif, a member of the Uzbekistan Writers’ Union and a well-known writer and translator, passed away at the age of 77, the union’s press service reported.

Born in 1949 in Khorezm, he made significant contributions to translation, scientific, and literary work. He translated numerous literary works from Turkish into Uzbek and held the arts of Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and other nations in high regard. He played a key role in strengthening literary ties with neighboring peoples and contributed greatly to Uzbek and world literature and culture.

In 1966, he graduated from secondary school with a gold medal and enrolled in the Faculty of Philology at Tashkent State University. After completing university with distinction, he began his career at the journal Mushtum. Later, he worked as a correspondent for the newspaper Toshkent Okshomi, head of department at the Uzbekistan Publishing House, chief editor of the Publishing Directorate at the State Press Committee of Uzbekistan, director of the Ghafur Ghulam Literature and Art Publishing and Printing Association, and held leadership roles at the Academy of State and Society Construction’s Akademiya Publishing and the Musiqa Publishing House.

He served as editor-in-chief for the Uzbek edition of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s book *The World Can Be More Just* in 2022.

He was also one of the scriptwriters and chief advisers for the series *Mendirman Jaloliddin*, produced in collaboration between Uzbek and Turkish filmmakers.

Under a presidential initiative in 2022, he actively participated in the publication of the 100-volume series *Treasures of Turkic Literature*, including translations.

Bobokhon Muhammad Sharif was the recipient of numerous international awards, including the Mahmoud Qashgari (Uzbekistan), Service to the Turkic World (Turkey), Karachay-Balkar (Turkey), Friend of Azerbaijan, and Rasul Rizo (Azerbaijan) awards. In 2023, he was awarded the Order of Friendship.

For context, on January 23, the renowned journalist and labor veteran Abdusamad Yoldoshev passed away at the age of 86.
