Yesterday, July 1, two Uzbek citizens who were due to leave Thailand were detained at Phuket International Airport after customs officers found more than 26 kilograms of cannabis hidden in their luggage. They were then arrested. The Thaiger reported this.

It was noted that customs officers at Phuket International Airport, in cooperation with relevant agencies, discovered dried cannabis flowers, cannabis resin and processed cannabis products hidden in several suitcases during baggage inspection.

According to customs officials, the individuals are accused of attempting to take cannabis products out of Thailand without completing the required customs procedures.

The first suspect, 26-year-old J.B., had four pieces of luggage, two of which were singled out as suspicious. An inspection found 30 vacuum-sealed packages of dried cannabis flowers with a total weight of 9.8 kilograms, including packaging, as well as 14 processed cannabis slabs weighing 1.03 kilograms.

The luggage of the second suspect, 26-year-old M.N., was also inspected. Customs officers found 30 packages of dried cannabis flowers weighing 9.8 kilograms, cannabis resin in eight bags weighing 4.1 kilograms, as well as processed cannabis products consisting of one package, five slabs and nine blocks, with a total weight of two kilograms including packaging.

The suspects were initially charged under the 2017 Customs Act with attempting to take goods out of the kingdom without completing customs procedures.

Officials also claim that Thailand’s narcotics legislation and the Ministry of Public Health’s guidelines on controlled plants, including cannabis, were violated.

According to Amarin TV, after the arrest, officers handed over both suspects and the seized items to investigators at Sakhu Police Station for further legal action.

The Customs Department said that attempting to illegally export cannabis from Thailand entails criminal liability. Depending on the type of offense and the court’s decision, violators may face a fine of 30,000 baht for each kilogram of cannabis or imprisonment.

Earlier, it was reported that three Uzbek citizens who had traveled to Malaysia were detained with narcotics and sentenced to death. Later, it became known that they were alive and serving prison sentences.
